June 5 Guemes to Santander

Maria, the Senora at the Posada Rural del Camino del Norte where we spent a wonderful night told us that there is a ferry from Soro to Santander.  So off we went, mostly downhill to catch it. That was after a breakfast of cake, grilled ham and  cheese and bread if we wanted it. For 50 Euros.
6 miles to Somo and a gorgeous ride for a few Euros saved us from a dreadful long bicycle ride through the industrial area.
I sat next to a man who was part of a tour from Tenerife. When he saw the Spanish flag flying over the town he laughed. I asked why? He said because the province of Cantabria wants to be independent. I said, "really? Along with Basque, Galicia, and Catalonia?"
He said Ina funny way that pretty soon Spain will be very tiny and only the Canary Islands will be part of it!  Politics.

Maria shared the name of this pension that we are in. Angelines. 40 Euros for an airy comfy room.

We walked 7 1/2 miles on our day off. But it was a gorgeous walk.  Weather is perfect and there's a long ledestrian stroll along the ocean with beaches all leading out to a park with an open air market, ecological preserve and the Palace of the Magdalena.
Now we're resting our bones before dinner and it might be Italian tonight. The mixed salads here are hearty, a full meal so that was lunch.

Bread!!

Cheese!

And tonight after a day walking, we took naps at 5, woke at 9 and decided to stay in and have yogurt and bananas for dinner. Such luxury to be untethered.

  2. Sounds heavenly! I love the market with all the breads! Did you swim at the wonderful beach? I would imagine the water is warm.
