Minneapolis to Madrid - a never ending day

May 29

Anna and Eben's wedding was on Sunday and on Monday morning Steven drove us to the airport.  We said our sad goodbye Light style 😢 and had an uneventful flight to Atlanta.  A 2 hour layover gave us enough time for a bowl of delicious gumbo and a glass of wine before boarding our Delta flight for Madrid.  We both continued taking the Melatonin our Doctor recommended for jet lag.

This is our third time arriving in Madrid/Barajas and the familiarity was welcome.  We schlepped (no better word) our luggage to the shuttle area, called the hotel and waited for them to pick us up.  The driver remembered us!! That made me happy.
First glitch: I reserved the hotel for June 1st instead of May 31st. No worries. A room was available.  By noon, we had the bikes assembled.  Thanks to Craig!!

Every Camino trip so far at some point we ditch a box of stuff we no longer have a need for. This time it happened before we even got on the Camino!!  We made arrangements to leave the bicycle suitcases at our hotel (Best Western Barajas) and so we simply piled the excess in the suitcase.  We'll be back here on June 10th for the Vaughtown experience and will claim them at that time. (More on Vaughan Town later).

A 2 hour nap was our next event.

And then we ventured out to add minutes to our Spanish phone purchased for our first Camino.  Note: Craig remembered the store where we bought it.  Yoigo.
We haven't lost it yet. At least one of us hasn't.

A little dazed we wandered for a while and then ended up at Restaurante Campanilla where our guy Pepe remembered us as well.

(See photo from last Camino)

Our first fresh crusty white bread!

Pepe proceeded to ply us with food. Meatballs, bacalao (fish stew) and kabobs with creamy potatoe salad.

We had the opportunity to see him in action flirting with all the tourists. He loves his work.  The gift this time was a boda bag.  Watching him delight the group of Japanese tourists with his command of The Japanese language reminded me again of the Richard Bach quote about speaking a foreign tongue.
I will find it.

We went to sleep happy and excited for the adventure ahead.
